Video – Incredible Istanbul: Three Perfect Days
This enormous city is a blend of Europe and Asia in the best possible way. Istanbul is one of the world’s oldest cities – but with its surreal landscape, delicious food, notoriously fun nightlife and vibrant culture attracting all sorts of visitors, the best is yet to come. This is a visual experience of my time with my wife while in Istanbul – one of our last international trips before we have a baby. My advice: put on a paid of headphones and open the video up full screen to enjoy. Incredible Istanbul: Three Perfect Days from Alex Lop on Vimeo. It’s a brisk winter day in Istanbul....

If you’ve been to Rome and liked it, you better put Istanbul on your list next. I’m dubbing this place “Rome of the Orient;” as the name suggests, Europe and Asia truly do meet in this fantastic city. Istanbul is perched on hills similarly to Rome. If Rome is known for its many, many churches, Istanbul is known for its mosques. The city itself is gorgeous. We arrived about 30 minutes before the sunset and rode into the city as the lights began to shine. The city came to life as we rode in, with the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque brightly glowing in the Old City....

Perspective. You gain it when you enter the courtyards of the Forbidden City. You learn it when you exchange a smile with a stranger. You taste it with the first savor of hot-pot broth. The heat of the midday sun soaked my shirt in sweat as I climbed each steep step up the winding stone path before me. Juyongguan. Thirty miles outside of central Beijing, but centuries apart. I was initially surrounded by scores of other tourists, but not up here. The stones of the snaking wall were worn with the footsteps of millions before me, but here I was, experiencing the Great Wall of China for my first time. Staring at steps and carefully climbing was exhausting on the eyes. I stopped to take in the view. The breeze cooled my overheated forehead. Jade fauna covered the...

Ni Hao, Alex here! This week’s #FriFotos’ theme is White, so I thought this was a perfect opportunity to share a photo from China along with providing a taste of things to come. After a whirlwind two weeks in China sans Google, Facebook, or Twitter, I’m back. The trip to the far east was outstanding – China blew away my expectations as a destination – each locale I visited offered a unique window into Chinese history, attractions, and culture. Below are some (black and) White photos from the garden city Hangzhou. The photos showcase Six Harmony Pagoda...

This week’s #FriFotos theme is Close Up, and the devil is in the details. Well, sort of. But the details do really pop up when close. This was a perfect opportunity to highlight some photography of strange fruit and textures up close from around the globe. I now have hundreds of photos of fruit up close. In Sayulita, Mexico I visited local craftsmen and got a chance to photograph their work up close. Who doesn’t like a good mexican Dia De Los Muertos figurine? In Bangkok, Thailand the draw was the markets and the strange fruit. And in Tokyo, Japan Tsukiji Fish Market proved to...
