It’s the new year, which means every major publication out there is releasing their lists of places to go in 2012. After reviewing literally 20 different lists yesterday, there are definitely some destinations that are trending (anyone want to go to Laos?). Out of all of the lists I’ve been looking at, the two most compelling lists I reviewed were on the Huffington Post and New York Times.
Huffington Post has a very interesting article titled the top 10 travel destinations according to Facebook. This list is based off of “analyzing the travel buzz in over 200 million comments, status updates, photo descriptions and check-ins from hundreds of thousands of people” – which was then turned into an excellent list of awesome destinations.
New York Times Travel also just released their top 45 places to go in 2012. Awesome list in general…45 might be a little overkill, if you ask me. But what I really like seeing is the variety in these. On a side note, I find it really interesteind to see how much the NY Times lists change depending on political climates, natural disasters, etc. For instance, Damascus, Syria was part of the list back in 2010. I have a feeling Syria will not be making a travel list for some time to come.
What do you think about these two lists? Are there any destinations you would add?

I was interested to see Myanmar on NYTime’s list, pretty cool. Always interesting to see where American’s feel welcomed and not each year. Do you think North Korea will ever appear on that list?
North Korea is my dream destination… is that weird?
Frankly, I’ve also always wanted to go North Korea. It’s one of those destinations that would definitely trigger some massive culture shock. I wonder if we’ll see actual, open, “unguided” tourism opportunities there or if it is just too far back in the dark ages to catch up.
